The Real Truth about HIIT

This is the 2nd in a series of 3 videos. The 1st was called Is Cardio a Big Lie?

The big lie I was referring to was that some fitness experts consider Cardio a waste of time.

While the jury is still out, the evidence after the first video was that both Cardio and HIIT should play an important part in your exercise program. Let’s quickly review what I covered in the first video:

Cardio is important when you are starting!

HIIT is increasingly important as you make progress!

Both are important if you want to lose weight!

Let’s now look at the remaining 3 variables starting with Metabolism:

4. Metabolism: There is no question about it but HIIT helps your metabolism and you will continue to burn fat after exercise. But, if you vary the intensity of your Cardio your metabolism will benefit too.

5. How Much: No doubt that HIIT is good for you but there is a limit to how much you should do especially when starting out or as you get older. I usually do 1 session a week and sometimes increase to 2 but never more than that at my age. If you do HIIT too quickly or too much you greatly increase your risk of injury and I see this all the time. Like the pros you also need to warm up, stretch and cool down.

6. Fun: HIIT is hard and not the easiest way to exercise. By itself it is not a lifestyle but it should be an important part of your exercise. It’s very important that exercise is a high priority in your life – Cardio or Aerobic Exercise, allows you to enjoy and have fun doing it.

What is my Conclusion?

This is clearly not a case of one is good and the other is bad. In reality they are inseparable partners and you need to do both. You need to find the right balance between HIIT and Cardio; but remember HIIT is tough and can only do so much!

In the third and final video of this short series, I will briefly explore some popular forms of HIIT and I will provide a simple but powerful way to compare Cardio and HIIT.

Until the next time in a few days remember my motto

You don’t have to be fit to start, but you do have to start to be fit and healthy.
